Long-life education in nursing science and art

THeofanidis Dimitrios , Antigoni Fountouki

Learning is not the simple absorption of information, facts and theories. On the contrary, it is the development of critical way of thought, so that we can deal with the overwhelming bulk of information that we face in everyday life. Adult learners through continuing education and pro-active learning extend their professional horizons, develop new skills, acquire up-to date knowledge and finally reach professional autonomy and self-confidence. The contemporary nurse should learn continuously. While his/her initial, basic education is an obvious prerequisite for his/her professional sufficiency, his/her attendance to programs of continuing education and his/her thirst for learning constitute the specific traits of his/her increased professional conscience. The advantages that continuing education offers to professional nurses are apart from access in new knowledge, the possibility for inquiring into their qualifications, faculties and skills in order to deal with the abundance of changes, new technologies and constant developments in the health care sector. The hospital’s continuing education department can organise postgraduate programs focused on specific scientific subjects which are part of a strategic in-service training. Finally, an essential condition for the successful attendance in activities of continuing training is apart from the nurse’s will to participate, the practical facilitation and moral encouragement from all the levels of nursing hierarchy.
