The impact of e-health on self-management and quality of life in patients with epilepsy

Abstract

Introduction: Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide, burdening the global budget regarding its prevention and management. The rapid evolution of technology has led to the development of electronic tools and applications aimed at managing and addressing chronic diseases.

Objective: To investigate the impact of e-health on self-management and quality of life in patients with epilepsy.

Materials & Methods: Literature search was conducted on the electronic database PubMed using the following keywords: "e-health," "epilepsy," "self-management," "education," "adherence," "quality of life." The selection criteria were a) studies involving humans, b) studies including clinical trials, c) studies published in English, d) studies involving adults, and e) studies published in the last five years.

Results: A total of 35 studies were found through literature research, out of which only 6 were finally included. The overall studies indicated that the use of e-health in patients with epilepsy may help improve their quality of life and disease self-management.

Conclusion: The use of e-health represents a huge advantage in the therapeutic plan of patients with epilepsy. Therefore, further development and widespread use of these tools by healthcare personnel as well as patients themselves are considered imperative.
